Prayers

Life of St Edmund's Prayer

StEdmundimage

Heavenly Father, as we gather in prayer, we ask for the guidance and inspiration of our school patron,
St Edmund, who led a life based on Gospel values and the belief in the power of God.

We pray that like Edmund, each of us will personally come to believe that,
“I can do all things with the help of God who strengthens me” (Philippians 4:13)
and that together our school community may grow ever closer to you and to one another.

May our school be a place that reaches out to the wider community
and is mindful of the environment around us.

We pray in the name of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit.

Amen

School Governors

The Governing Body has overall responsibility for the School and information about the ways in which the Governors discharge this responsibility is given in the School Profile.

Hopefully, you will find here all the information you need but if not, please do not hesitate to e-mail, telephone (023 9282 3766) or call in to the School.

The Governors are proud of the way in which the School consistently achieves excellent examination results and commendable Ofsted Reports. Both the staff and the Governors are deeply committed to the School and its pupils. The whole School community endeavours to create a warm, caring environment in which all can feel secure, have a sense of purpose and foster a commitment to genuine Christian values. We firmly believe that each individual is of equal value and we strive to ensure that each pupil achieves his or her full potential.

Vacancy for Parent Governor

The Governing Body (GB) for St Edmund's Catholic School has a vacancy for a Parent Governor.  The role of a Parent Governor is the same as any other Governor.   Like all other Governors, they are charged with the responsibility under the School's Standard and Framework Act of 1998 to: "conduct the school with a view to promoting high standards of education".

There are 3 strands to the role:

- Take a strategic view.
- Act as a "critical friend" to the school, the staff and students.
- Ensure accountability, especially in terms of finance.

The GB consists of 12 Governors: being a Voluntary Aided Catholic School, 7 are Foundation Governors appointed by the Bishop; 2 are from the staff, including the Head; 2 are Parent Governors and 1 represents the Local Authority.

The members of the GB have a range of skills and experiences which enables them to undertake their key duties.  Training is offered to broaden skills e.g. to improve awareness of financial matters.

There are 2 meetings of the GB each term.  In addition, each Governor will serve on a Sub-Committee.  For example, the Finance and Personnel Committee.  Each Governor is also expected to be a 'link Governor' where they take a special interest in several subjects, visiting the school on behalf of the GB, formally and informally on a rotating basis.

How to Apply

If you are interested in being considered as a Parent Governor, please collect a nomination form from Reception.  The form will explain the process.  Should there be several applications it will be necessary to hold a ballot.

Closing Date

4pm on Friday 9th March 2018.

Information for Foundation Governors

There is an established process for the recruitment and appointment of foundation governors in the Diocese and as you are aware, carrying out the administrative task associated with the process does take a considerable time to complete.

During 2014 there will be over 200 foundation governors whose term of office will come to an end and the school will need to advertise once again for foundation governors.

It is important that the School’s Instrument of Government, a legal document, is adhered to, and in particular, the specific requirements regarding the number of foundation governors that, at the time of appointment, are eligible as parent foundation governors.

It cannot be assumed that a foundation governor who indicates a willingness to be re-appointed will automatically be re-appointed

Should they wish to be considered for re-appointment they will be asked to complete a reply slip and a signed declaration, indicating any change in personal circumstances. In addition they can provide a new supporting statement if they so wish.

A parent foundation governor whose child no longer attends the school will not be eligible for re-appointment.  However they may wish to apply to serve as a foundation governor.  Those governors who do not wish to be reconsidered, we would appreciate that they still complete the relevant reply slip. The Bishop automatically re-appoints the Parish Priest who is a member of a governing body.

The process, application form and Ministry of Governance, are on the Diocesan website. Please follow these links for further details:-Foundation Governor- Catholic Diocese of Portsmouthand Portsmouth Diocese - Governance.

When an application arrives in the Department for Schools Governance office, consultations and religious references will be undertaken, whether or not they are for a new applicant or a foundation governor re-applying.
