Senco

The Special Educational Needs Department
The department is led by the SENCO and it includes 11 Teaching Assistants (TAs) and 2 Higher Level Teaching Assistants (HLTAs). Each TA and HLTA is attached to a subject department within the school.
Their role in the department is to help teachers monitor and develop the progress of pupils with SEN. In lessons all TAs provide additional support to pupils with SEN so as to encourage them to make progress through tasks which are manageable and rewarding.

In addition to their classroom support role some TAs offer specialist support to pupils with SEN; examples include social skills work, speech and language support, Dyslexia screening and support, management of concessions for public examinations and assistance for pupils with English as an additional language.
SENCO works with colleagues at St. Edmund’s, other schools and outside agencies to identify and plan appropriate support for pupils with SEN.
