Life of St Edmund's Prayer

Heavenly Father, as we gather in prayer, we ask for the guidance and inspiration of our school patron,
St Edmund, who led a life based on Gospel values and the belief in the power of God.

We, pray that like Edmund, each of us will personally come to believe that,
“I can do all things with the help of God who strengthens me” (Philippians 4:13)
and that together our school community may grow ever closer to you and to one another.

May our school be a place that reaches out to the wider community
and is mindful of the environment around us.

We pray in union with the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit.

Approach to Teaching

In Mathematics at Saint Edmund’s students are taught using a wide array of teaching methods.

We match different teaching styles to different topics and abilities to ensure the needs of our learners are always being met.

Although teaching strategies may vary from lesson to lesson there will be many classroom routines used throughout the year that you would expect to see. Learning is constantly assessed through activities using tools such as mini-whiteboards. Teaching is dynamic and uses ICT, such as interactive whiteboards and visulaisers. We encourage our learners to become independent as well as interdependent.

Key Stage 3 content (Year 7 - 8)

Learners are grouped by ability and follow the syllabus at a level that is appropriate for them. We encourage our students to push themselves as high as possible and regularly review our groupings to make sure every child can succeed.

The current KS3 Curriculum is divided into several topics and these are met throughout the 2 years; Number, Algebra, Geometry and Measures, Probability, Statistics, Ratio, Proportion and Rates of Change. Within these topics we also develop fluency and a student’s ability to solve problems by reasoning mathematically.

Key Stage 4 content / exam board / spec (Year 9 - 11)

St Edmund’s Catholic School follows the Edexcel linear course with pupils from Year 9-10. The course is offered at two tiers: Higher and Foundation.

Higher Tier – covering grades 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 & 9.

Foundation Tier – covering grades 1, 2, 3, 4 & 5.

Ongoing assessment help us decide which tier is most appropriate for each pupil. There is no coursework in Mathematics. The GCSE examination will be 3 papers, 2 will be with a calculator and one without. Final grades are allocated by adding together the results of all 3 papers.

Students in Year 9 combine the more challenging topics from the KS3 Curriculum and the beginning of the KS4 Curriculum to smooth the transition from one key stage to the next. Year 10 will continue to follow the KS4 Curriculum at the appropriate level, keeping in mind the high expectations that Saint Edmund’s sets for its learners.

Year 11 currently follow the WJEC linear course which has no coursework and is two tiered. Higher covers grades C-A* and Foundation grades G-C.

KS4 Revision Guides:

Year 11 GCSE Higher Tier LRT (Learn, Revise, Test) Booklet

Students are expected to supply their own calculator and should purchase one before starting at Saint Edmund’s Catholic School. We provide books, homework and all additional resources necessary for the successfully achievement of the learners in our charge.

We also have a stock of revision cd’s which pupils may purchase for £4 and we highly recommend these.
