Life of St Edmund's Prayer


Heavenly Father, as we gather in prayer, we ask for the guidance and inspiration of our school patron,
St Edmund, who led a life based on Gospel values and the belief in the power of God.

We pray that like Edmund, each of us will personally come to believe that,
“I can do all things with the help of God who strengthens me” (Philippians 4:13)
and that together our school community may grow ever closer to you and to one another.

May our school be a place that reaches out to the wider community
and is mindful of the environment around us.

General Information About the Department

The Geography team of teachers is based in The Kelly Block in the south western corner of the school site. We have 2 large classrooms and 1 that can be used with smaller sized classes. There is an ICT suite in room K4 which is primarily for use by Humanities teachers and can be booked in advance so that suitable room changes can be implemented.

At present pupils receive four lessons a fortnight of Geography in Years 8 and 9 and three lessons a week in Year 7. At KS4 Geography is a popular option choice. There are 10 GCSE classes in Key Stage 4. Geography is viewed as an enjoyable and relevant subject by many pupils. In Years 10 and 11 pupils have 5 lessons of Geography a fortnight.

The exam syllabus followed in Geography is WJEC Spec B, a well-established and particularly relevant syllabus for an inner city school such as St. Edmund’s.

The Geography team have departmental meetings to discuss generic and specific issues such as schemes of work, end of unit tests, controlled assessment, field trips and implementation of whole school policies in Geography. The Geography team is well established and encourages discussion of what works well in lessons. Resources are shared as much as possible so that a collaborative approach is developed in order to share good practice.

Fieldtrips are an integral part of our departmental teaching philosophy. There is a regular pattern of fieldwork and educational trips throughout the year, with all year groups having at least one trip on offer in either or both subjects. Currently we organise local and regional trips including, , The Isle of Wight, The New Forest, London Docklands and the Olympic Park, Kew Gardens and Iceland. Whenever we can we try to involve pupils in initiatives that bear directly upon their studies such as working with local planners to develop innovative ideas regarding different areas of Portsmouth.

The department is a member of The Geographical Association.

We have a long standing link with the University of Portsmouth in order that we can be involved in the ITT scheme for teacher training. We believe that having students working with us is generally good for the department, allowing evaluation of our systems and nurturing a symbiotic relationship between established practictioners and fledglings.

Approach to Teaching

We believe in making Geography lessons an interesting and enjoyable experience for all pupils in Key Stages 3 and 4. We believe it is essential to use topical examples of Geography in the news. We think that it is important to:-

·         Encourage pupils to have enquiring minds that see the world through geographical eyes!

·         Develop pupil understanding of their surroundings and extend interest in other places.

·         Encourage an awareness of the interaction between physical environments and their resultant human reactions.

·         Increase pupil understanding of social, economic and environmental issues that affect people at local, national and global scakes.

·         Develop a sense of awe and wonder about our planet

·         Encourage a sensitive awareness of and respect for the environment.
